Survival Weekend june 09 Ross Wood

During the weekend 3 explorers from our group took part in a basic survival camp at Ross Wood with some of the explorers from Ramillies. Upon arrival and after a talk about the weekend their kit was sorted out the following was all they were allowed for the whole weekend, the clothes/ shoes they were standing in, a bowl or plate, a fork and mug, sleeping bag and a roll mat, a wooly hat and finally a pen knife. Their first task was to build a shelter to sllep in over the next two nights out of a sheet of polythene 2 mtrs by 2 mtrs and a length of sisal. A good job was made by each team consisting of two young people. After a hot drink and cake it was bedtime. The next morning each team had to build a campfire only from materails they were able to find from around the forest and a couple of matches, eventually all fires were lit and breakfast was cooked on them. As the fires would need to be kept in all weekend as this would be there only way of cooking all their meals it was then necessary for them to constantly collect firewood. Next they were given instruction on the safe use of knives and other cutting materails. Lunch consisted of mackeral which all ably cooked in the embers. More wood collecting was required and then they were handed their evening meal which consisted of a rabbit which needed skinning and preparing, they also needed to make their own cook pots and a tripod to hang their pots on over the fire. A good rabbit stew was had by most although some did not like the taste/ smell, followed by a chocolate cake that they made in the whole skin of an orange they had eaten earlier. More wood collecting to stoke up the fire for the night. Next morning some fires had to be relit whilst others managed to get them going from the hot embers, breakfast was then cooked. More wood collecting and their lunch was then handed out pheasant this time which then had to be plucked and gutted before being prepared to cook, again most undertook this with ease and on the whole it would appear most enjoyed this part of the tasks given. Some elected to cook their meat and veg in their pots whilr others cooked everything in foil in the hot embers, either way a delicious meal was cooked.  On the whole a good weekend was had, If you would like to view some of the pictures they are on the website.
