Italian themed evening meal

The Spitfires Explorer unit put on an Italian Evening at The Scout Hut on Saturday 3rd October to raise funds for this new unit. From 11am that morning the scout hut was a hive of industry with the young people all learning how to lay and decorate the tables and hall as per the theme. Next they were taught how to prepare the vegetables for the evening meal, this included how to bundle up green beans in thin strings of leak leaves. Next they learnt how to sear the meat for the main course. It must be noted that most of these young people had not undertaken much in the way of these tasks before plus they were also working under very difficult conditions. With no oven, a marquee was put up in the front garden and 6 gas burners were set up to cook all the food as well as keeping a constant supply of hot water going as there is no hot running water available in the scout hut. I don't think they had realised how much washing up there would be to do throughout the whole day but they all got stuck in without complaint. Befoe our 36 guests arrived each of the Explorers changed into their smart clothes and became waiters/ waitresses for the evening showing their guests to their tables and them serving up all four courses. The meal consisted of Melon Boats, Minestone soup, Chicken Cacciatore with new potatoes, green beans, peas and carrots, this was followed by Tiramisu and coffee with home made Chocolate Liquers. The evening was a great success with all the young people being commended by all who attended for their professionism and for providing a superbly entertaining evening. The event raised a total sum of £250-39 which included £84-00 raised from a raffle that was run during the evening. All of our guests have already requested to know when our next evening will be held as they wish to be invited, this will probably be held about mid January next year but of course a fresh theme will be undertaken. Inthe meantime I would like to thank and congratulate all the Explorers for all their hard work in making the evening so successfull, I am very proud of you all. Also many thanks to Margaret who assisted us in making the evening what it was. Well done everybody and especially to those who supported us.
