Kent International Jamboree - 26-08-2009

Kent International Jamboree, During the 30th July and the 6th August, 6 explorers, 10 scouts and 4 leaders attended the Jamboree at Shaws Campsite, Sevenoaks, with over 2000 young people from all over the world. We arrived saftely and were soon erecting our tents in torrential rain, which cleared up later for the opening ceremony to be held at the bottom of a very step hill which was challenging for some of the youngsters as well as most of the leaders. Our group was on the Tolerance sub camp, made up of about 500 other groups from across the UK and the world. Everyone was up early on the 1st morning Fri as we were all of on our day out to Hastings, the weather was bright and sunny as we made our way up to Hastings cliff tops and the Smugglers Caves in which we spent a very interesting morning, lunch on the cliff top and then back down to the beach where we lazed in the sunshine with the young people taking the time to paddle in the sea. The evening saw the Explorers at a Bond night. On the Sat our sub camp under took Onsite Activities, which consisted of some of the following to name but a few, Air rifles, Archery,Climbing, Flight Simulator, Go Karts, Grass Sledging, Inflatables, Sub Aqua as well as things like Badge Swapping, Crafts, Glass engraving, Woggle making and Kite making. Unfortunatey due to bad weather our camp fire was cancelled on the Saturday evening but with a disco and other activities and a Wacky Quiz night run for the explorers there was still plenty to do. Sunday saw a sub camp day with everybody from our sub camp joining together for breakfast, followed by each group putting on a stall for a country fayre, lunch again all together, whilst we were being entertained by Morris Dancers, some of our group had a go at this. In the afternoon we watched a circus skills event at the end of which everyone was allowed to have a go. In the evening there was a showcase in which one of our explorers put on a rap. Well done Rob a great performance. The Explorers then went off to a Hawaiian Beach party suitably attired!! Monday saw the whole sub camp up and off early for their Water Sports activity day with some going to Whitstable and some to Faversham to do things like Power Boating, Sailing, Canoeing, Kayaking, Dragon Boating and Long boat rowing, another warm sunny day with everyone having a great day. Tuesday was made up of a morning and afternoon session of it's a knockout, the morning for the dry activities the afternoon very wet including rain. All had another fantastic day. Wednesday saw another day of onsite activities with the young people either having another go at things previously tried or doing some of the things they hadn't done. The Explorers had an hour seesion in the afternoon on the buggies which they greatly enjoyed, though watching them I couldn't say whether this has put them in good stead for their driving tests!! In the evening a carnival parade was held followed by a party, many people dressed up for this it was a fantastic sight and a great end to a brilliant camp.
