Biggin Hill Air Show - 08-07-2009

Biggin Hill Air Show. During the weekend of 26th June, the Spitfires Explorer unit travelled to assist at the air show. 6 explorers, 2 scouts and 2 leaders left Birchington on Friday night and set up camp on Downe Activity Centre. On Saturday morning we were all up by 6am, and once ready we walked from Downe through there extensive woods into the back of Biggin Hill Air field. After instruction we were set our tasks for the day which started with a 90 minute duty guarding the Military Jet area, giving us the opportunity to get up close to planes like the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Hawk T. Mk.1, the ground crew and pilots were very kind and gave us the chance to look all over these jets. The day continued with 90 minutes off duty and then 90 minutes back on. Whilst off duty we were allowed to explore the show and from 11-45am onwards we like thousands of others watch the displays up in the skys, which were truely amazing. Some of the displays included Team Guinot, the worlds only wingwalking team, the Battle of Britain Memorial Team, which included the Hawker Hurricane, Avro Lancaster and Supermarine Spitfire and The Great War Display team with the Nieuport 17, the R A F SESA'S, Sopwith pup, Fokker Dr 1 Triplane and the Junkers CL 1. The Black Cat Helecopter display team as well as the Flying Fortress, Kittyhawks, Messerschmitts, Mustangs and of course the thundering Avro Vulcan. But the highlight of both days was the Red Arrows, who on the Sunday entered the air show following the Virgin Atlantic a sight not to miss, TRUELY STUNNING. There was obviously plenty to see and do on the ground as well, so over the 2 days a brilliant time was had by all. Please see the web site photos for a brief view of the show.
